The "Can You C Me?" conference, held on July 3rd, 2024, in Croydon, marked a significant step towards addressing racial disparities in cancer care. Spearheaded by a collaborative effort between Macmillan Cancer Support and the Croydon BME Forum, this event highlighted the urgent need to improve healthcare outcomes for Black and ethnic minority communities across South West London. The conference is part of a broader initiative aimed at tackling the glaring inequalities in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and support experienced by these communities.
Statistics underscore the importance of this work. Research from the British Journal of Cancer reveals that Black people are 38% less likely to be diagnosed with cancer through screening compared to their White counterparts. Such disparities underline the necessity of targeted interventions and the amplification of marginalized voices in healthcare discussions.
The "Can You C Me?" project spans six South West London boroughs, with conferences planned in each area over three years. These gatherings bring together key stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, community leaders, and advocates, to foster dialogue and develop strategies for more equitable cancer care.
The Croydon BME Forum, a driving force behind the project, has long been committed to promoting equality and cohesion within the community. Partnering with Macmillan Cancer Support, they aim to challenge the systemic issues that lead to health disparities and work towards a future where everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity, has equal access to life-saving cancer care and support.
